Why Dycem Floors Are a Better Choice for Your Facility

Here’s a little know fact, but one which can have significant bearing on your business; one of the factors that affects your product yield and your staff’s productivity is the type of flooring installed in your facility. Find out why Dycem non-slip mats are your best option.

With the availability of various commercial and industrial flooring solutions, it is understandable why people often get confused by the options sold in the market. However, if you work in a facility where cleanliness and hygiene are of the utmost importance, then Dycem flooring solutions are the ones you need to consider first and this blog is for you

In fact, the Dycem mat flooring range is a great choice for facilities given their anti-slip properties, microbe and contaminant proofing, traffic resistance and price. In fact, in many, many ways, this original solution is better than many of the alternatives you may be considering.

The Challenges Encountered in Commercial and Industrial Flooring

Commercial kitchens, hospitals, production floors, industrial facilities — spaces like these are prone to operational concerns especially when it comes to ensuring the safety and productivity of the personnel working in the area.

Of the common challenges faced by building owners and managers, three issues are prevalent: slipping, contamination, and due to wear and tear, the premature replacement of the flooring surface.

Slipping Accidents.

  • Shockingly, between 2003 to 2015, slips, trips or falls accounted for the death of 386 workers in Australia. Of this figure, 23 per cent or around 90 accidents resulted in serious claims. Every year, thousands of injuries such as cuts, fractures, dislocations, musculoskeletal injuries, and bruises happen as a consequence of slipping, tripping, or falling.
  • One of the main culprits for slipping is when the wrong type of floor is used. In fact, according to Safe Work Australia, the country’s statutory body that develops national policy relating to WHS and workers’ compensation, accidents happen when people are “... walking on slippery floor surfaces such as those that are highly polished, wet or greasy…” Also, a person can trip if there are “... uneven edges in flooring, loose mats … worn floor coverings or broken tiles…” among others. Many, if not all of these factors can be overcome where the right floor is used.

Contamination and Microbe Growth.

If you run a restaurant, a food production business or even a pharmaceutical facility, you will undoubtedly know the importance of ensuring that every aspect of your premises is clean, spick and span if you will.
Sadly, as you will know, however, that no matter how you mop your floor to keep bacteria at bay, the problem may spring from the type of flooring material used. As a matter of fact, some floors are unfortunately spaces which prove to be a good breeding place for microbes. Whether it is a result of design to achieve certain aesthetics, or a factor of price, some floors allow soil, grit, oils, water and germs to seep through their corners and pores. Once they have, they become reservoirs of potential contamination.

Premature Replacement of Flooring Material

Again, whether by design (a showroom floor for example) or because of price restraints, some floors damage easily because they are either of inferior quality or that they are only capable of bearing a specific load capacity. If they are subject to excessive weight every day, their strength slowly becomes compromised. Some get torn right away; others become loose, causing unevenness on the surface.

With regular foot traffic and daily travel of equipment and machinery in the premises, you need a flooring solution that can withstand heavy load as well as the test of time.

Dycem Non-Slip Mat Flooring for Improved Movement and Efficiency in Commercial and Industrial Spaces

The Australian government agency promoting safety at work suggests the use of treatments that increase the surface roughness of the flooring layer. Examples of these include grinding, chemical etching, sandblasting, and resin coating which all improve slip resistance in the premises. These procedures do help with anti-slip regimens, however, they do not necessarily comply with hygiene standards.

Where hygiene is critical, building owners can consider installing floor mats or adhesive anti-slip strips. At Remedial, we highly recommend the use of Dycem sticky mats.

What is Dycem?

Established in 1966, Dycem is one of the global leaders of contamination control solutions with applications in the commercial and industrial sectors. They sells Dycem non-slip mats which, when positioned and sized correctly can provide up to 99.9 per cent contamination control efficiency. Furthermore, according to the manufacturer, Dycem’s polymeric mats and flooring are impregnated with Biomaster antimicrobial technology that can effectively “... capture and retain up to 99.9% of both foot and wheel-borne contamination and up to 75% of airborne contamination.”
No wonder it is the number one flooring choice of globally known brands such as Johnson and Johnson, Nestle,  GlaxoSmithKline, Abbott, Pfizer, BMW,  Motorola, and, IBM, among others.

What’s are Dycem Non-Slip Pads?

Specially made to eliminate contaminants from specific areas, Dycem’s unique polymeric surface is designed to conform to industrial shoe and wheel profiles. This soft and supple feature allows for the collection of unwanted particulates from as small as 0.1 to >100 microns in a total of six footfalls or three full wheel rotations.
Dycem mats contain Biomaster—a silver ion-based anti-microbial—which is responsible for keeping more than 50 different organisms including Salmonella, E.coli, Listeria, and MRSA at bay. Whatever contamination and slip resistance requirements you have, ask about Dycem’s three main products.

The Dycem Range

For pedestrian and light wheeled traffic

Dycem CleanZone Floating Floors. These are suitable for places where permanent installation over a subfloor is not possible. These ready-to-lay loose mats are perfect for raised floors, access tiles, or construction areas. They are non-skid, non-absorbent, and most importantly, antimicrobial and can easily be placed over smooth or rough subfloors.
The CleanZone Floating Floors are bonded strongly into a 1/16-inch isolated membrane and assembled with a cold-welded edgie. They are expected to last between three to five years as long as the care instructions and maintenance guidelines are adhered to.

Dycem CleanZone (CZ01). This flooring is ideal either high pedestrian flows and/or light wheeled traffic up to 70Kg/square centimetre. It is available in a range of colours – where colour-coding is critical (Hospitals for example) and providing clear demarcation between clean and dirty areas.
Another advantage of CZ01 is that it can be installed in specific sections within the facility or, where required, cut to shape to fitas a wall-to-wall matting. Life expectancy is also between 3-5 years guaranteed that the maintenance guidelines are followed correctly.

For heavy traffic environments that use large carts, pallet trucks, and forklifts

Dycem WorkZone (CZ02). Dycem WorkZone is the only mat or flooring solution that effectively controls contamination from large carts, forklifts, and pallet trucks up to 90kg/square centimetre. It is regularly used within food production facilities and pharmaceutical laboratories to prevent ingress of contamination from wheels.
Like CZ01, WorkZone CZ02 can be customised to perfectly fit the shape and size of the floor space  requiring installation. It is available in different colours to again help you identify and segment any critical zones from the rest of the area.
