Shark Park, Cronulla - Passive fire protection
A Red Hot stand for Cronulla
Project: Shark Park New Southern Stadium.
In early 2008, Remedial Building Services Australia were contracted to perform design specification, supply, installation & certification of the Nullifire thin film intumescent fire rating system which was to be applied to the new structural steelwork for the Southern Stadium at Cronulla Football Club.
Architects, Habitation Pty Ltd recognised the need for passive fire protection as part of the construction process. Upon consultation with Remedial, the decision was made to apply Nullifire S707-120 system, which would address the criteria as required by the builders:
- Exposure to the environment (exposure to chlorides, UV degradation, abrasion resistant)
- Durability of the system (20 year cycle)
- Aesthetics of the finished system (colour retention, gloss level)
Furthermore, we explained to our client that we have the experience and expertise to provide a complete turn-key service from design through to application and certification. At Shark Park specifically, we installed the intumescent using 3 distinct procedures:
- Primer System: Nullifire Epoxy Zinc phosphate primer was applied at 75 microns off-site with the steelwork then transported to site and erected.
- Intumescent System: Nullifire S707?120 was installed by Ram mounted airless pumps to the load bearing structural sections at varying dry film builds. The achieved FRL is 120/-/-/.
- Seal Coat: Nullifire Fluropolymer seal coat (Weathered Copper) was applied in two coats using both airless and roller methods.
As our Manager of Fire Rating was quoted:
"The application of a thin film intumescents over the more traditional methods achieved a dual purpose. We achieved the required 60minute FRL yet also provided a finish that allowed the contractor to choose a top coat that achieved exactly what the client wanted: an aesthetically pleasing result.
We have replicated this scope of work several times and will continue to do so given the adaptability and ease of application over more traditional fire rated coatings"
The job was completed within the designated timeframe as allocated with little, if any impact upon other trades working on-site at that same stage. If you would like further information on this job, please contact us today.
